Talking about access to mental health (MH) services confronts us with a reality where the lack of mental health care and services, as well as related financing, has enormous and far-reaching health, social and economic effects for individuals, families, communities and society in general. Resource limitations cause large gaps in the care provided, with only a small fraction of people who have mental illnesses receiving the care they need. We reflect on the bioethical challenge of caring for the sick with professional quality and personal warmth, marking respect for the dignity of human life.
