Riflessioni etiche sulla produzione e commercializzazione di organismi animali e vegetali geneticamente modificati
L'Autore esamina sotto l'aspetto etico il vasto dibattito in corso sulle biotecnologie, riferendosi in particolare agli organismi geneticamente modificati.
L'Autore approfondisce l'attuale concorso delle biotecnologie allo sviluppo umano, soffermandosi sull'eticità della "manipolazione" della natura vivente secondo una visione antropocentrica moderata, nella adeguata tutela della biodiversità ambientale e di un sufficiente grado di benessere animale.
L'articolo si sofferma poi sui "rischi", che costituisce una delle principali domande etiche maggiormente avvertite dall'opinione pubblica.
Riconoscendo la difficoltà attuale di una valutazione epidemiologica precisa del "rischio" derivante dall'uso di alimenti geneticamente modificati attualmente commercializzati per la salute umana, lo studio si conclude affermando che è necessario: 1. Promuovere una maggiore informazione pubblica sui temi complessi delle biotecnologie e degli organismi geneticamente modificati; 2. Sostenere il criterio della valutazione scientifica del rischio, adottando peraltro il "principio di precauzione" (che tuttavia va meglio specificato in senso giuridico nelle applicazioni biotecnologiche); 3. Prevedere uno sviluppo di armonici rapporti fra i diversi settori interessati dalle biotecnologie (produttori, università per le attività di ricerche e formazione, consumatori, etc.), anche mediante l'assunzione dei criteri di massima "trasparenza" e di facoltà di scelta; 4. Assicurare a tutti i popoli della terra i benefici che possono derivare dalle applicazioni biotecnologiche.
