At first glance, the morality of conjugal sexuality seems to emerge as the central question of Humanae Vitae. I dont want to insist on this point. Other themes merit attention and I will focus this reflection on one such theme: the distinction between man and woman, which is to say sexual difference and the anthropological issues linked to such difference. While Paul VI had already taken into account the importance of sexual difference, the culture was not yet strongly impregnated with alternative views. Today, the cultural climate is polarized around the concept of «gender» as personal identity detached from sex. Following the orientation of the recently concluded Vatican Council II, Humanae Vitae adopts a personalist approach to conjugal love and relations between spouses. For Paul VI «spouses» are husband and wife, and «conjugal love» is between man and woman. Today, conjugality is expanded. The «spouses» can be «partners» of the same sex. «Conjugal love» can be separated from procreation and the generation of new life can come about in the laboratory. New proposals are presented as a «new humanism», such as «transhumanism» that goes beyond the inadequate humanism lived until now. Gnosticism was one of the first dangers that the first Christians needed to overcome, yet seems that Gnosticism has returned with the appearance of originality. What does Humanae Vitae have to say about this situation? Beyond the moral aspects still debated today, I take into consideration the anthropological foundation that grounds the moral aspects proposed.
