L'animale parlante: la retorica come dimensione essenziale dell'essere umano

A partire dalla definizione aristotelica di essere umano come "animale parlante", nell'articolo si indagano le ragioni per cui la retorica debba considerarsi una dimensione essenziale dell'essere umano. Nella misura in cui l'umanità si esprime attraverso la parola, la retorica diventa un mezzo irrinunciabile per la conoscenza della verità. Se Platone, nel Gorgia, aveva messo in luce il potere oscuro della retorica, come tecnica di manipolazione della verità, Aristotele intende la retorica come tecnica di cui è possibile conoscere le regole, portando l'attenzione sul necessario rapporto tra retorica e verità. In bioetica, più che in altre discipline, la retorica sembra assumere un ruolo fondamentale: oltre al contenuto scientifico che fondamenta le argomentazioni, in bioetica è essenziale la forma entro la quale tale contenuto è proposto. I dibattiti bioetici si generano spesso dalla mancanza di chiarezza nell'utilizzo dei termini: se tali ambiguità restano nascoste, il dibattito si risolve nell'opposizione secca tra due schieramenti. E' necessario conoscere tanto i contenuti scientifici quanto i mezzi retorici impiegati per poter discriminare con maggiore chiarezza tra argomenti solidamente fondati e posizioni sofisticamente indotte. Di qui la distinzione tra "retorica progressiva" - rintracciabile laddove vi sia un atteggiamento positivo e costruttivo - e "retorica regressiva" - con la quale abbiamo inteso indicare quegli atteggiamenti difensivisti e oppositivi. In conclusione, riflettiamo sulla natura della retorica come disciplina che mescola componenti affettive e razionali. In una posizione intermedia tra logica ed estetica, la retorica rappresenta una necessità con la quale la bioetica deve confrontarsi se vuole crescere attraverso un confronto razionale, positivo e costruttivo.

Moving from the Aristotelian definition of human as the only animal endowed with the gift of speech, we focus on the reasons why rhetoric has to be considered an essential dimension of human being. As humanity is strictly related to speech, rhetoric became a fundamental medium for knowledge of truth. Plato, in Gorgia's dialogue, underlines the risks of rhetoric conceived as a mere instrument of manipulation, while Aristotle sees in rhetoric a useful technique, drawing the attention on the necessary relationship between rhetoric and truth. In bioethics, more than in other disciplines, rhetoric seems to be very important, since the scientific content of the argument must fit into an adequate linguistic form. Bioethical debates often grow on lack of clarity in terms used: if the ambiguity remains unclear, the debate becomes raw and worthless. It is necessary to understand both the scientific and the rhetoric level of the argument to clearly discriminate between true and sophistic statements. The distinction between progressive rhetoric and degenerative rhetoric highlights different attitudes in bioethics: constructive and positive vs. defensive and regressive. In the conclusion, we reflect on nature of rhetoric as discipline that mixes both affective and rational dimension of human. In between of logic and aesthetics, rhetoric constitutes an opportunity for bioethics to grow in rationality, unity and solidity.
