The Author starts with an overview of the factors which led, as from the 1920s, to the introduction and spread legislative reforms aimed at legalizing voluntary abortion in Europe (secularization process, liberation movements, the spread of situational ethics, family values, etc). Having examined the various models adopted by European states in order to discipline "medically protected" abortion, the author then briefly describes the political-parliamentary process resulting in the approval, on 14 April 1978, of Italian Law n. 194 on "Social Protection of Maternity and the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy".
