From 2004 through the Groningen Protocol the termination of life of neonates was put on the agenda of the debate concerning euthanasia inside and outside the Netherlands. In the meantime Dutch government has established the national regulations, effective from 2006. Every human life, including that of the neonate, is an intrinsic value, which may not be sacrificed, also not in order to end suffering. The being unbearable and the hopelessness of suffering may not be used as a criterion for justifying active termination of life. The opinions regarding the hopelessness of suffering also appears to differ among physicians. Palliative sedation may be a solution in order to reduce suffering to bearable proportions. It may be legitimate to renounce life prolonging treatment, also when the end of life is accelerated by doing so.
