Capire gli itinerari del pensiero medico, mostrare i nodi teoretici in cui la spiegazione scientifica s'incrocia con un'intenzione pragmatica e con un'inferenza valutativa, indicare le direzioni d'influenza che legano la cultura di un'epoca con le sue strategie terapeutiche, insomma cercare di dipanare la complessità di un atto che si presume liberatorio, tutto questo dovrebbe tentare una ricognizione metamedica.
